Fri, May 09, 2008 - 10:46:00

From the newsroom of the Dunn Daily Record, Dunn, North Carolina, Thursday, May 8, 2008 .....

Deaf Man Killed By Train

Sitting on the railroad tracks proved fatal for a deaf Strickland's Crossroads man late last night, according to the Four Oaks Police Department.

John Elmer Gilbert Jr., 38, was killed when a train hit him while he was sitting on the railroad tracks between Tucker and Baker streets in Four Oaks around 11:30 last night, said Lt. Holly Bennett.

"He was sitting on the railroad tracks and there's possibly some alcohol involved and he was hearing impaired," she said.

The train conductor was interviewed in the incident, Lt. Bennett said. Pedestrians being hit by trains is not uncommon, she said.

According to an article in the News & Observer from March 26, 2007, a 48-year-old intoxicated man sitting on train tracks near N.C. 96 and U.S. 70 was struck and killed by a train.
