Deaf students to play music with Duxbury High School Band

Deaf and hard-of-hearing students at Clarke School East will enjoy the sounds of the Duxbury High School student orchestra as they join together to make music Thursday, June 2, 10 a.m., in a mini-concert at the school, 1 Whitman Road, Canton. This is the second year that Duxbury students will visit Clarke School East, a school that teaches deaf and hard-of-hearing children to listen and talk.

The Clarke preschoolers will play instruments and sing songs along with the Duxbury orchestra. After the concert, preschoolers will spend time with the Duxbury students, talking with them and trying out their instruments.

"With high-powered hearing aids and cochlear implants, deaf children have access to music and enjoy it just like any other preschooler might. They enjoy singing the songs that can be used as language learning opportunities, and the natural prosodic features of music assist the children in learning to produce contours in their own spoken language," said Clarke School East director Cara Jordan.

Clarke School East, established in 1995, is a campus of the Clarke School for the Deaf/Center for Oral Education in Northampton. The school has an international reputation for excellence in teaching deaf and hard-of-hearing children to listen, speak and understand others using the English language without the use of sign language. Campus-based programs, teacher training and outreach services provide help every year to more than 500 individuals and families around the world. With newborn screenings for hearing loss and other advances in technology, Clarke's services are evolving to meet the needs of families. Clarke offers four other early childhood programs along the East Coast in addition to Clarke School East in Canton, New York City, Bryn Mawr, Pa., and Jacksonville, Fla.
