From the newsroom of the Rome Sentinel, Rome, New York, Thursday, July 17, 2008 .....
Assemblywoman RoAnn M. Destito says that legislation that would affect the New York State School for the Deaf is now before the governor.
It would require Committees on Special Education to provide parents of blind and deaf children with information about both the school in Rome and the School for the Blind in Batavia.
"As the Assembly representative for the School for the Deaf which is located in our community, I was very pleased to sponsor this legislation so that both of these vital educational institutions continue to provide the best possible services to some of the state’s most underserved populations," Assemblywoman Destito explained. "I recently toured the School for the Deaf here in Rome, and I am always impressed with the outstanding work that they do to teach the students how to integrate into the community in which they live."
For over one hundred years, the two schools have provided services to children with multiple disabilities. The State Education Department administers the schools, and this legislation will require that a reference on both schools be included in the handbooks for parents of children with handicapping conditions.
