SCSDB chief says SLED investigation is news to her

The S.C. Law Enforcement Division confirmed Monday that an investigation was recently opened at the school, but no details about the subject of the inquiry have been released. News of the investigation came only a few days after the school announced that president Pamela Shaw would be replaced at the end of the month.

"Dr. Pamela Shaw and I have read and viewed several media accounts of a so called 'SLED investigation' involving the School for the Deaf and the Blind," wrote attorney J. Lewis Cromer in a news statement issued Tuesday afternoon. "Neither my client nor I have ever been advised of such an investigation by law enforcement authorities. Dr. Shaw is unaware of any circumstances during her tenure as president of the school which would suggest any improper, let alone criminal activity or involvement on her part, and she has never been advised of the same."

The statement adds that it was Shaw's decision to leave the school and she will not make any further comments. Neither Shaw nor the school has cited a reason for her leaving.

Shaw served as president of the school for seven months. Her departure, effective Aug. 29, was announced after the school's board met Thursday and Friday behind closed doors in Columbia to discuss personnel and legal matters.

A permanent replacement has not been named, but Vice President of Outreach Services Carol Mabry will serve as interim president.
