Over the past few years, Travis Dougherty has logged hundreds of hours in Gallaudet’s Bison TV office, reviving old Bison TV shows and creating popular new ones. But when he entered the CBS network studios in New York City this fall, he wasn't sure what to expect.
Dougherty, a senior communication studies major, soon learned that he would be part of one of the most popular programs on national television, “Late Night with David Letterman.” He was one of 10 students selected from a pool of hundreds of applicants to land a coveted internship with the Letterman show.
"My first thought when I found out was, 'Yesss!'" said Dougherty. He got the email on the train from New York back to Washington, D.C. after a long day of interviews and meetings with the key players who make the show happen. In addition to being thrilled at an opportunity that has launched television careers, Dougherty suspects he is breaking new ground. "I believe I am the Late Show's first deaf intern," he said.
Dougherty, who hails from Florida and Tennessee, takes his job as the head of Bison TV seriously. With the help of a dedicated staff, he has helped to bring back the popular show “GUTS,” last shown in 1996, and created reality shows like "Trading Dorms," based on the TV show "Trading Spaces." Dougherty was also instrumental in setting up a live web stream of Bison TV programming, allowing off-campus viewers from anywhere in the world to access its fun and informative content. Students have started to send him material, and he is happy to incorporate it.
The semester-long internship will begin in January, said Dougherty. Students will work on all areas of the show, including production, music, finance, writing, and talent. He has been assigned to work with the research department. This spring, when David Letterman quips about the news of the day, or recalls exactly what he talked about with a guest the last time he or she came on the show, it could very well be Travis Dougherty’s handiwork.
