Woman, reportedly deaf, dies after being hit by train in Yakima
Associated Press
A woman described by relatives as deaf has died after being struck by a train at a downtown crossing in Yakima.
Sheila Bennett, 58, who lived in an apartment near the downtown Yakima, fell while pulling a shopping cart across the railroad tracks Friday afternoon and was hit by a slow-moving train, police said.
Engineers saw the cart, then noticed the woman and slammed on the brakes but were unable to stop the train in time, investigators said.
Authorities initially expected Bennett to survive, but she died Saturday morning at Yakima Regional Medical and Cardiac Center of broken bones and other injuries. Her identity was released Sunday.
